The Story of Gwin’s Lodge: A Legacy of Adventure in Cooper Landing

Cooper Landing, Alaska, is a community built on grit, determination, and a love for the wilderness. One of the most inspiring local stories comes from Pat and Helen Gwin, whose dream turned into one of the Kenai Peninsula’s most iconic landmarks: Gwin’s Lodge.

In 1946, Pat and Helen arrived in Cooper Landing with nothing more than a tent, a pack, and the determination to carve out a life in Alaska. The couple began the hard work of hand-cutting logs from the surrounding forests, crafting them one by one into the walls of what would become their lodge. Through harsh winters, long days, and endless effort, the Gwins built a home that would one day welcome travelers from around the world.

By January 1, 1952, Gwin’s Lodge officially opened its doors. More than just a roadhouse, it became a gathering place — a warm stop along the Sterling Highway where weary travelers could find food, shelter, and good company. Over the decades, the lodge has grown into a symbol of Cooper Landing’s spirit: resilient, welcoming, and deeply connected to the land.

Today, the story of the Gwins still resonates with anyone who comes to Cooper Landing. Their courage and vision remind us that Alaska is not just a place to visit, but a place to build dreams. At Alaska Expeditions ULTD & Resort, we share that same pioneering spirit. Our mission is to provide a turnkey way for adventurers and families to experience Alaska’s beauty — just as Pat and Helen once welcomed travelers to the heart of the Kenai.

So the next time you drive through Cooper Landing, take a moment to appreciate the history that shaped this community. And when you’re ready to create your own Alaska story, we’ll be here to help you live it.
